Nobody’s Fool

As Young As I Used To Be

I find it hard to wake from my dreams

My bones ache when I rise

And though it’s not as easy as it once seems

Just waking up is still a blessing in disguise.

Where did all those early days go?

Why do they seem so far from me?

I didn’t ask for things to change so fast

I guess I’m not as young as I used to be

My kids are acting kind of strange

While I drive them off to school

They ask me where my hair has gone

and look at me as if I’m so uncool

It seems so wrong, so wrong to me now

Worked so hard just to reach forty-three

I’d take back those years if I could

But I’m not as young as I used to be

It all seemed so easy once

Just laugh the days away

College life a mirage from long ago

A pretty face, a kiss could lead my life astray

But nowadays, I just don’t know

Just where would we go

And Is there any still fire down below?

The younger ones are at it tooth and nail

Working overtime to just get by

Stressin’ over if they’ll win or fail

I got past that point by and by

Perhaps where I am at was bound to happen

‘Round a curve of time you can’t foresee

But still in all I’m glad with the result

Cause I still feel as young as I used to be

The curve of life was always waiting

For me to value what I’d see

I’d not go back to live the frenzied lives

I’ve learned of what matters most to me

Lord knows, I’m where I want to be.

It’s better than I thought it would be.

I’ll just stay as young as I used to be.

But For Your Love

Like driving down a lonely road

The signs are there but I can’t decide

Confusion has my progress slowed

My compass gone, I’ve lost my guide

There, but for your love I go

There, alone, afraid and shy

Never thought I could feel so low

There, but for your love go I

I stop for a drink and change my clothes

The liquor’s strong, but not enough

My thoughts just drift away like smoke

I’m left alone just hanging tough

There, but for your love I am

Caught between the earth and sky

When can my life begin again?

There but for your love am I

Life seems so hard and lasts so long

A bitter path without an end

Like a meadowlark robbed of his song

Lonely as a forgotten friend

There, but for your love I go, I go

Grateful for you by my side

For all the times it didn’t show

There but for your love go I

Yes, there but for your love go I

Nobody’s Fool

Not a flower in hand or a sonnet

No emotion that’s worn on my sleeve

Not a visible sign of what honest

But I still refuse to leave

I’ve been living my life as tho’ she needs me

My companion in all of my dreams

I just can’t find the means to tell her

The world that she means to me

Chorus

If I could tell her

Keep my cool

And part with this fear

That seems is the rule

She’s amazing but life is cruel

But I’ll be nobody’s fool

When I look in her eyes there’s thunder

In my heart’s ever-turbulent skies

And I’m forced to admit my bias

All other girls are disqualified

Chorus

Sometimes it haunts me to wonder

As I try and grasp this jewel

Is it better to be somebody’s nothing

Or be nobody’s fool?

Chorus

Looking For A New Mistake To Make

It could happen to most anyone

A simple twist of chance

You’re looking down one way

And don’t take that backwards glance

And suddenly it hits you

Like a bolt out of the blue

It nearly knocks you off your feet

And you don’t know what to do

You weren’t looking in that direction

Just deciding which road to take

But now that you’ve got me turned around I’m looking for a new mistake to make

You dial the number on the phone

You expect to call to go through

But then the line’s diverted

To heaven knows where to

And the person on the other end

Who could not expect that call

Connects in ways she never knew

That’s the irony of it all

She didn’t look for linkage

Just a call she chose to take

The wrong numbers that can change your life

While you’re looking for a new mistake to make

Oh, oh , oh It’s such serendipity

Oh, oh, oh

Tripping over entropy

Taking a left turn into love!

Just ask anyone you want

‘Cause it happens everyday

You’re walking fast to reach your goal

Just to learn it’s the other way

And you laugh at where you find yourself

It’s what you wanted all along

Ain’t it funny how such a small mistake

Leads you where you can belong?

Life can lead you down the path

The one you never thought you’d take

Getting lost in love can be such fun

The First Casualty of War #2

When you looking for a new mistake to make

Before the first ‘copter touches down

Before the first missile flies

Before the first boot hits the ground

Before the first widow cries

Ask yourself what we came here for

And what was the first casualty of war

While you watch the TV shows

As the daily toll unfolds

Just ignore what you suspect you know

And accept what you’ve been told

That it’s “Freedom” where fighting for

And disregard the first casualty of war

They say: “We don’t have the choice;

We have to end what we begin . . .”

Don’t even think to raise your voice

Even as the body bags roll in

Is this where the glory comes?

The lies they told for oil and tears

Bear in mind they are the ones

Who thank our fallen from the rear

We can’t go back to what was before

We can only mourn the first casualty of war

(Guitar solo)

They say: “We don’t have the choice;

We have to end what we begin . . .”

Don’t even think to raise your voice

While the body bags roll in

Spoken: “Pay attention now . . .”

Is this where our glory comes?

Lies they said for oil and tears

Bear in mind they are the ones

Who thank our fallen from the rear

We can’t go back to what was before

Spoken: “it’s time we start acting like . . .”

It’s Freedom we’re fighting for

Spoken: “And ask yourself”

What did we really come here for?

Spoken: “And next time”

Please recall the first casualty of war.
